Drama Strategy 6: Machine

  • Machine is a strategy for which students take on a “part” of a machine by moving their body in a repetitive, singular motion. Students join in one by one to create a collaborative “machine” or represent a concept together as a collective group.
  • Machine will be used in class a way for students to recreate the tragedy of 9/11 with their bodies as a collective group. Each student will take on a role, whether it be a person, building or object, to create a machine which represents the events of 9/11. One student will start the machine, then one by one each student will examine the roles already taken by their peers and join in as their own part of the machine.
  • Younger/Older students: Modifications can be made for differing grade levels to suit the abilities of students and the amount of instruction given (more instruction/guidance for younger students, more freedom to create for older students)
  • Students with Learning Disabilities/Special Needs: Students will be provided with a machine position for them to copy, or if student has visual or hearing impairments, they can pair with someone else to assist them in communicating or making movements.
